Introduction
Hello everyone, my name is Tim Townley and today I will be giving you my thoughts on the “Tamron 17-28mm f2.8” and why I think you should have this in your tool kit as a videographer/photographer.
All opinions are my own and I have not been paid for my review. I have paid for this out of my own pocket.
Welcome and thank you for joining me here while I give honest reviews of products I’ve used and work within my production workflow. My hope is that my reviews will give you a better understanding of the products so you can make informed purchases that will help you grow your photography and videography.
Today we will be taking a closer look at the “Tamron 17-28mm f2.8”. This is a wide-angle zoom lens with a large 2.8 aperture and very lightweight compared to other similar lenses in the same class. It has a filter diameter of 67mm which is small for this full-frame, large aperture, a wide-angle lens such as this and only weighing 420g.
The biggest reason I bought the “Tamron 17-28mm f2.8” over the Sony 16-35mm f4 is because of the price but also the Tamron has a much larger aperture. The price is between $500-700 difference, depending on where you buy it, and I could use that on other gear. At the time of this vlog, the best place to buy it is on Amazon for $1075 CAN or $900 US.
This lens is great when it comes to the features. It has a minimal focal distance of 7.5 in at the 17mm wide end and 10.2 in at the other end 28mm.
The next really awesome feature of this is the autofocus performance including Eye AF. It is super-fast and accurate as you can see from the tests in the video not to mention how quiet the lens is. I have yet to find the lens being too loud to use for video. Most of the time, I am using a mic system or doing post audio, but have never come across any weird or loud sounds on camera.
The construction of the lens is built solid with a plastic-like body and not like the Sony brand lenses with the metal structure, but feels durable and also has a moisture-resistant construction which is not always a normal feature for cheaper lenses like this.
The 17mm will get you a 103-degree field of view on a full-frame format compared to the 107 degrees from the Sony 16mm.
If you are a gimble user, like I am, this is also a great option for the internal zoom and creates less of an issue for balancing your camera when changing focal lengths.
In conclusion, is this a good lens for your kit? The answer, this lens is an amazing value for the quality and features and I say yes. When I was looking for a lens, this one was hands down my best options and well worth it. I am also thinking about getting the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 to replace my Sony 24-70mm.
As far as things I don’t like about this lens, there really isn’t any. However, I would prefer the metal body and full weather sealing, but it’s not a deal-breaker for me.
